The first corn I planted on May 2 only has spotty germination (the seed was from 2011 so I guess I shouldn't be surprised), so I'm going to just till that under when the ground has dried some and replant with the Miracle hybrid ( Read more... )

Went to Home Depot today and got 10 bags of cheap topsoil ($1.29 per bag for a 40 lb/1 cu. ft. bag) to put on the bare clay part of the upper plot I've discussed before. Here is the first cob pulled off one of the larger ones, a couple haven't matured properly but this one is almsot perfect and ready to eat...

My Googling ability is failing me. The corn from our (first year, obviously experimental) garden is tough, chewy, and well, gross. Is this a matter of the variety being bad? Just a bad crop? Picked too early or too late? The ears were sort of skinny, but the kernels were big. The silks had dried and turned brown. If pricked, the kernels didn't leak ( Read more... )
